Twenty years after setting up Chiron Werke UK Limited and selling their first Chiron FZ series machining centre, the company - now trading as the Engineering Technology Group - has sold many hundreds of Chiron machines into the UK in the ensuing years. It has been 20 years that have seen ground breaking moves forward in machine designs, computerised technology and control, turnkey and automation capabilities as the industry in general has developed and Chiron in particular has pioneered new developments and machining concepts. Machining centres and turnkey solutions “Made by Chiron” are the now world’s first choice across a spectrum of metalworking industries in small, medium and large-sized engineering and manufacturing environments.

The Sertec Group has completed its largest ever take over by buying WILD Automotive,  creating a £250 million group. The automotive giant has bought Midlands based WILD automotive to create a group with  manufacturing plants across the UK, Germany and Hungary. WILD has manufacturing sites in Birmingham, Hungary and Germany. The acquisition is supported by £20 million funding by the Business Growth Fund (BGF) and Lloyds Banking Group that was provided earlier in the year. Both have invested further to support this latest transaction, alongside Santander Bank, which makes its first syndicated contribution to the growth plans of Sertec. In addition, K&H provided local asset finance in Hungary.

The UK's manufacturing output grew while total orders remained solid, according to the latest CBI monthly Industrial Trends Survey. The latest survey of 505 companies found that export order books reached a two-year high, suggesting that the depreciation of sterling since the end of last year may be feeding through to stronger overseas demand. Manufacturers in the chemical sector accounted for just over half the improvement in export orders with less than one-third of the 17 manufacturing sub-sectors reporting export orders at below normal levels. Despite the improvement in exports, total order books mainly stayed unchanged, yet remained comfortably above the long–run average. Output growth remained at a healthy pace.

Sheffield Forgemasters’ position as a global steel rolls supplier has been reaffirmed after it secured two contracts worth more than £4.5m with Russian and German steel companies. Despite the downbeat media still bleating on about Brexit, Sheffield Forgemasters has certainly rolled its sleeves up and got on with things. The multimillion pound deals are for a range of work and back-up rolls that will be supplied to Russian steel giant Severstal and to Germany’s only tinplate manufacturer, ThyssenKrupp Rasselstein. This deal is the second overseas deal in as many weeks for the Sheffield company after it announced a £23M contract for castings for US military submarines.

The year-on-year growth at Hainbuch UK now sees the workholding specialists move its UK operation to a new purpose built office in Cannock, Staffordshire. Only a mile from the previous site, the impressive new 2000sq/ft facility will provide Hainbuch with a designated meeting room, demo area, training facility and it will also provide significantly larger stock holding capacity than the previous building.

Competition is fierce within the engineering training sector, therefore those that want to succeed have to develop new strategies to differentiate them from the ordinary. This is the case at Midland Group Training Services, where multiple layers of training that can be tailored to individual company needs have been developed and can be provided on a local, regional and national platform. Investment in modern machine tools is central to this approach to delivering the best training for the current and future generations of engineers.

MCM HEK based in Lübeck, Germany, is a member of the MCP Group, who have additional facilities in Wellingborough (UK), Fairield (USA)and Shenzen (China). Their activities are based around the production of non-toxic Bismuth chemicals for use in many industries including pharmaceuticals and electronics. MCP HEK had a fire in 2009, resulting in the destruction of their existing dust extraction plant. To keep production going MCP HEK looked for a company that could provide a quick delivery and maintain their high standards.

Leading aerospace and multi-axis machining subcontract specialist, HEC Precision Ltd., invests in its fourth Doosan multi-tasking turning centre from Mills CNC. HEC Precision Ltd, established in 1993, manufactures high-precision, complex components and assemblies for a diverse range of industry sectors and, most notably, for a growing number of blue-chip aerospace and defence customers. The company offers its customers comprehensive manufacturing services and solutions from prototypes, pre-production and production, and is ASEN 9100 and ISO 9001: 2008 accredited as well as holding quality approvals from a number of leading aerospace OEMs.

A leading manufacturer of point of sale and display equipment is looking to expand its range of CNC machining capabilities, and says Alphacam Advanced Router, from Vero Software, is integral to its plans. A.S.H. Plastics already uses Alphacam for high quality, accurate machining of its range of sheet material, and working on complex parts that it would not be able to undertake without it. Joint Managing Director David Archer says it is especially valuable for prototyping, as they can generally get a prototype on the machine ready for cutting, within 20 minutes. “When we were programming manually it could take up to an hour, so there’s considerable time saving.”

A Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire based engineering company is re-inventing itself from being a general sub-contractor to a company specialising in prototyping, bespoke component manufacture and project design engineering with a particular expertise in the medical and aerospace sectors. Having overhauled its premises and production layout Colt Precision Ltd has also invested in the first of a number of versatile machine tools – an Engineering Technology Group supplied Quaser MV154EH 3 axis VMC with a Nikken 4th axis rotary table giving it an on-demand additional capability.
