On the Hardinge Group stand at the forthcoming MACH 2012 exhibition, Leicester based Jones & Shipman Grinding Limited will be exhibiting 4 grinding centres, demonstrating the diversity of its range of machines from large capacity precision cylindrical grinders to compact surface and profiling machines.
The largest machine on display will be the latest UltraGrind 2000 CNC cylindrical grinding machine featuring a new design modular wheelhead and multiple wheel spindles. The new wheelhead design ensures customers have a wide choice of external and internal grinding spindle combinations, effectively creating a custom machine, but without the cost and build time associated with it. The wheelhead offers wheel sizes up to Ø500 x 100mm (Ø20” x 4”) and wheel spindle power up to 15kW (20 hp).
The B axis on the UltraGrind 2000 is available in two options - a 3 piece pneumatic fixed position Hirth® coupling or an optional true B axis programmable to 0.0001°using a Heidenhain® rotary encoder.
The fixed Hirth® version features a unique design that ensures all movements occur internally within a fully sealed unit, eliminating the possibilities for ingress and ensuring longer life and reduced maintenance.
The UltraGrind was designed with manufacturers of precision components in-mind; companies that have to produce complex precision parts, particularly in small-to-medium sized volumes and need maximum flexibility. Flexibility combined with ease-of-use improves productivity, keeping component prices competitive and matching some high-volume production systems that rely on using multiple machines.
The UltraGrind 2000 CNC is ideal for production environments including aerospace, defence, medical, toolroom, motorsport, automotive volume production and general engineering applications.
The Kellenberger KEL-VISTA UR 175/1000 is positioned as an ‘economical/ universal’ CNC grinding machine with a wide range of end user markets ranging from complex die and mould manufacture to small and medium batch production work. A good all rounder, it is a cost effective CNC alternative to hydraulically controlled cylindrical grinding machines and with its simple, user friendly menu based programming, enables its areas of application even to operators with limited programming capabilities.
Other features of the UR 1000 include a compact design with small footprint, a thermally stable swiveling workhead suited to chuck work and grinding between dead centre’s and thermally optimised bearings to guarantee highest roundness and dimensional accuracy.
The ergonomic design with a low machine platform ensure easy manual loading and unloading which also contributes to rapid change over times thanks to a travelstick and handwheel.
Also featured at MACH will be the latest Jones & Shipman UltraMat 1000 CNC universal cylindrical grinder equipped with the latest Fanuc Oi-TD touch screen CNC control with a Windows embedded system. This offers the operator all of the advantages of CNC control without the complexity of traditional CNC systems.
A range of options enable the user to tailor the machine precisely to the project in hand. These include external, angle head, universal, twin wheel and fully automatic ‘B’ axis along with loading, gauging and probing.
As with all J&S machines, great emphasis has been placed on machine design and build quality to enable maximum thermal stability and heat isolation to ensure the consistency of the finished workpiece.
Finally, the TECHMASTER 634 EASY surface and profile grinder offers toolroom or batch production capability by combining rigid construction with innovative design features.
The grinding centre has been purpose designed to offer unrivalled ease of use with manual, semi or fully automatic operation via the J&S developed ‘Self Teach’ software. At start up the operator is presented with three modes - manual, dress or grind cycle - and having made the choice most suited to the operation required, he can easily select the most suitable and be rapidly in production.
The machines featured at MACH will be operating in cycling mode and a full team of experts will be on hand to discuss specific requirements.
