CNC machine operatives 'in short supply'

Story added 28 November 2008.

There is a shortage of skilled CNC machinists, it is claimed.

Mike Page, the editor of Manufacturingtalk, suggests British machine shops are being hit by an ongoing shortage of skilled workers.

It takes a considerable period to train staff in operating CNC machine tools, he states.

"I don't mean only in programming but understanding what machining is about and what the options are, if programming is not solving a metal cutting problem," Mr Page continues.

Previously, Mr Page suggested there has been an increase in the number of machine tool orders in the UK, despite the current economic slump.

Recently, Tony Saunders, Yamazaki Mazak's UK sales director, told attendees at a seminar it organised that a skills shortage is hitting UK manufacturing companies.

Manufacturingtalk reported that Mr Saunders said the lack of adequately trained operatives is preventing some from competing effectively in the global arena.
