CNC machining firm develops "beyond comprehension"

Story added 06 March 2009.

A family-run CNC machining firm has developed "beyond comprehension" during its 30 years of operation.

Portsmouth-based MacVere began operations in 1972 and is now run by brothers Mark and Gary Macey, sons of the founder.

The precicision engineering company now boasts a diverse customer base, product type and batch size, with CNC lathes and CNC milling machines having taken over from the previously manual machine shop.

It operates nine Bridgeport and Fanuc CNC machining centres, 15 CNC sliding head turning centres from Star and Tornos and eight Emco CNC turning centres.

"We produce anything from one-offs to batches of 300,000," explains managing director Gary Macey.

"The parts are produced from nylon, brass, copper, stainless steel, peak and more exotic materials."

Employing 16 people, MacVere recently trialled the TaeguTec parting-off tools on its turning centres, which resulted in improved tool life, surface finish and straightness.

The system will now be implemented on all of the precision engineering firm's 23 turning centres.
