Crest Engineering fined for gross safety negligence

Story added 30 June 2009.

A precision engineering company which removed the guards on its CNC lathes and milling machines has been fined £13,000 plus £3,003 in court costs following successful prosecution by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

David Norton, an inspector with the HSE, said Crest Engineering took a deliberate decision to leave its CNC milling machines in an unsecure state by removing the safety guards, despite a formal warning from the HSE regarding the issue.

He continued: "Safety guards are there for a reason and, by not providing them, the company put the lives of its employees in danger. Factory work can be extremely dangerous and so it's vital that the risks are reduced to a minimum."

Mr Norton stressed that the HSE will happily take action to prosecute any precision engineering or manufacturing business which follows in the footsteps of Crest Engineering.

The HSE is governed by a strict set of rules which ensure that public safety and good practice are first and foremost in the minds of many, with the organisation aiming to reply to every complaint or enquiry within ten days.
