Cutting edge profile "critical" for managing heat

Story added 25 November 2008.

Cutting edge profile, rather than heat dissipation through swarf, is the "critical factor" when it comes to managing heat generation, it is claimed.

A spokesperson for the tooling firm Walter GB makes the comments as the company reveals it has extended its turning insert range with WSM30.

This, it states, is a tough grade which can more effectively withstand interrupted and heavy rough cutting of substances such as austenitic stainless and heat resistant alloys.

Heat dissipation through swarf is impossible with these materials, it notes.

"The greater edge definition allowed by PVD in comparison to CVD coating, coupled with the protective properties of aluminium oxide, therefore give WSM30 a significant advantage," the company continues.

Recently, Walter GB revealed it had modified its Prototyp solid carbide thread milling cutter for hard machining to give it a greater carbide content.

The company claimed this has considerably increased its cutting edge life.
