Dry cast iron turning given 'greener option' by LMT

A company's target of users wanting higher productivity and more environmentally-friendly dry cutting conditions has been fulfilled again, it has been announced.

LMT Boehlerit's specialist carbide and coating division has finished proving trials with the new Casttech LC610H grade of turning insert, showing that the tooling can be used without coolant at speeds of up to 500 m/min.

Precision engineering companies wanting to get hold of the tool can find it available through LMT (UK) of Coventry, which has noted the advantages of the new insert in its combination of hard substrates with a special chip breaker and coating which reduces friction levels.

Aluminium oxide is combined with the TiCN-TiC coating, creating the "ultimate surface hardness giving new levels of durability under harsher cutting conditions", LMT added.

As a result, the onset of cratering on the top of the insert is minimised and thermal stress build-up markedly cut.
