'Investment needed' in CNC tech and skills for future

Story added 21 January 2009.

Manufacturing's role in society will remain central for a long time and as such, steps must be taken now to preserve the future of the sector, an industry specialist has said.

Tony Sarginson, a regional manager for the north-east at business body EEF, said skills in sectors such as precision engineering were important as new people needed to be suitably clued-up on developing systems to keep Britain's industry at the top of its game.

He added that in order to become a low-carbon or green economy, companies also needed to be able to make large investments in things like CNC lathes and other machine tools at the technological forefront, as well as "the real priority" of a skilled workforce.

Mr Sarginson concluded: "At EEF we believe we must make it easier for employers to invest in skills. A highly-skilled and talented workforce is going to be vital for the continued success of manufacturing in the north-east."

The EEF represents over 6,000 companies in the technology, manufacturing and engineering sectors of the UK and holds regional offices around the UK.
