LMT provides great CNC tooling solution for Triumph

Story added 25 November 2009.

Following extensive trials at Triumph Motorcycles to improve critical inlet and exhaust valve guide production for its top-selling Daytona 675 Triple engine, a solution has been provided by LMT UK to deliver 43 per cent savings on tool life when compared to the nearest competitor.

The contract has been so successful that when they were integrated into production, LMT's precision engineering tools brought about a 15 per cent reduction in direct costs per valve guide for the production of 12-valve cylinder heads at the automotive firm's Hinckley factory.

Off the back of this, Triumph's engineers initiated more cutting trials for a pilot reamer application to pre-size the valve guide ready for final reaming, bringing about further savings and doubling of tool life expectancy, allowing the production line to reamer consumption by 74 tools a year.

Production engineer at Triumph Rob Doyle said he was impressed with the predictable life and quality of LMT's CNC machining offerings.

He added: "It also enables us to meet the high demands put on the engine by our enthusiastic customers."

The Daytona 675 is the winner of the 2009 Supertest King of Supersports award - making it the fourth time it has claimed that title - while it was also named Motorcycle News' Sportsbike of the Year.
