Laser sintering of titanium gains market importance, says EOS
Story added 25 September 2009.
EOS has reported that an increasing number of applications involving customised manufacture of parts and series production from titanium powder have been recorded.
The organisation, which specialises in laser sintering machines from its Krailling base near Munich, Germany, said since the introduction of its EOSINT M270, both machine technology and titanium building has significantly advanced.
EOS explained that titanium is expensive to work with, though the ability of the laser sintering process to build hollow and similar lightweight structures can improve the performance and value of titanium parts in "weight-critical applications" including aerospace.
Mike Shellabear, the vice-president for metal technology at EOS, explained that titanium applications can be extremely demanding, with the medical and aerospace markets requiring top-notch properties from milling machines and
CNC lathes to reliably achieve these.
He continued: "Now that we have demonstrated that our technology can fulfil these requirements, we see growing interest in and acceptance of DMLS as a production method for titanium. We expect to see rapid growth in this area."
This year, EOS participated in the "Great Place to Work" employer competition for the first time, which is operated by Institute Deutschland, reaching 82nd out of 252.
