Leading aerospace unit adopts CNC lathe technology

Story added 23 December 2008.

The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing has chosen to install PowerMILL computer-aided manufacturing systems from Delcam, it has been announced.

Forming a joint initiative for the aerospace industry, the University of Sheffield and passenger jet manufacturer Boeing are looking to produce a world-class facility and have called upon Delcam to supply it with a software set-up which harnesses CNC lathes and five-axis machines.

Commenting on the acquisition, research director at the AMRC Professor Keith Ridgway said: "We're pleased to be using Delcam's PowerMILL software at the AMRC Composites Centre.

"The flexibility and control provided by PowerMILL enable our engineers to develop optimised machining strategies for even the most demanding components."

Other major industry affiliates to the AMRC include Rolls-Royce, Messier Dowty and Smiths Industries, which share technical information and developments to keep the facility at the forefront of the sector.

Earlier this month, Delcam released version five of its PowerINSPECT software, which is designed for use with five-axis machines.
