Less applications of better quality 'could spell success for trainee precision engineers'

Story added 13 March 2009.

Students and skilled artisans hoping to join the precision engineering industry may want to tailor their applications if they are to be more successful in the current jobs market, it has been said.

Chris Morrall, a graduate recruitment careers management expert, made his comments to the National Graduate Recruitment Exhibition in London this month, noting that people attempting to get into UK manufacturing industries such as precision engineering needed to be more selective.

He said that every application had to be the best, stating that by simply mass-producing them in the hope that some may hit the target, there would be no luck.

Mr Morrall continued: "Get two or three people to check your application before it goes in. [It is] better to get it checked by a friend, rather than rejected by an organisation. Poor presentation means poor performance [and] rejection."

The most recent figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed that the employment rate for people of working age in the UK now stands at 74.1 per cent in the three months up to December 2008.
