LMT Fette invests in CNC machining centres and a turn-mill centre to boost hob production
Story added 11 January 2010.
MORE NEWS
Following the installation of five-axis simultaneous machining centres and a turn-mill centre worth over £3.5 million by LMT Fette at its German manufacturing facility, the specialist manufacture of gear cutting tooling can now offer a faster turnaround for delivery of hobbing cutters.
Production lead times and the levels of quality have both improved through the single-cycle production strategies being adopted following the installation of the three five-axis simultaneous machining centres and the turning centre.
The £3.5 million investment follows the installation of new PVD and CVD coating equipment during 2008 by LMT Fette, The installation of the PVD and CVD coating equipment led to the development of the patented Nanosphere multi-layed coating for hobs and the Twist-Free, multi-functional combination hobbing and deburring tooling system.
The Nanosphere coating acts as a heat shield but reacts elastically to protect the cutting tool from high thermal and mechanical stress, enabling the gear hobbing cutters to be run without coolant.
The Twist-Free single arbour tool assembly can be applied to the hobbing of both spur and helical gears The combination hobbing and deburring system enables the functions of a roughing hob, the in-cycle deburring of top and bottom flanks of each tooth and the finishing of the gear to be achieved in a single cycle.
