Manufacturing in the UK has shown 'impressive determination'

Story added 22 May 2009.

UK manufacturing sectors including precision engineering are showing strength in the downturn despite all factors in the economy working against it, an expert noted.

Head of contracts and programmes for the Manufacturing Institute Adam Buckley responded to reports from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) that manufacturing confidence in the UK is returning to levels last seen in September 2008.

Mr Buckley said: "We must remember that manufacturing businesses have shown impressive form in their determination and inspiration in re-engineering performance during periods of recession and most importantly [are] becoming stronger for it."

He added that while there is a mixed outlook for manufacturers, there are areas of high growth including CNC machining industries working in low carbon technology, with international trade still going strong.

Over the past ten years, the Manufacturing Institute has helped transform performance in the industry and works with over 13,000 manufacturers to extol the virtues of competition in the market.
