Manufacturing 'must be saved'

Story added 19 February 2009.

A recent report by the Work Foundation thinktank has stated that the government must give the same monetary backing to the manufacturing industry as it has to the banks.

The sector, which includes CNC-based industries such as precision engineering, is struggling with a drop in demand alongside dozens of other sectors in the UK after the effects of the recession have hit it hard.

Report contributor Ian Brinkley said it would be wrong for people to write the sector off as it is still unclear what part such industries as precision engineering will play in the future of the British economy.

Trades Union Congress general secretary Brendan Barber responded positively to the proposals set out by the Work Foundation.

He continued: "This is an extremely welcome report that shows the importance of manufacturing not just to today's economy but to our post-recession future.

"Other European countries know the importance of today's high-tech manufacturing firms keeping skilled teams together during the recession."
