Manufacturing sector in UK rebounds during September

The biggest monthly rise in UK manufacturing activity has been recorded following data released by the Office for National Statistics, showing a rise by 1.7 per cent month-on-month.

It followed a tumble of two per cent in August and provides hope that the fall in business during the final summer month substantiates the argument of factory shutdowns during the season leading to the contraction.

The rebound in manufacturing output, which includes precision engineering firms, was also much higher than the forecast by the City, which predicted a jump of only one per cent.

However, manufacturing output in September was still down by 9.3 per cent over the 12-month scale and as such is still drawing caution from some of the industry's major players as to the true extent of recovery.

Despite a slightly dramatic fall between 2002 and 2003, official statistics showed seemingly consistent growth from 2001 until the turn of 2008, after which the manufacturing sector has any growth completely wiped out in the space of a year.
