NUMcut launched to provide novel tool head design

Story added 12 October 2009.

A vendor of CNC products has launched a ready-integrated pan-and-tilt solution for sophisticated plasma, laser and waterjet cutting machines at a recent conference.

At the EMO show in Milan last week, Coventry-based NUM revealed its NUMcut toolhead designs, providing a "very simple means of extending the capability of machinery from 2D to 3D applications with precise multi-axis interpolation".

It is hoped that the package will bring a number of technical advantages to the precision engineering sector, with the "novel mechanical design" providing versatility of movement yet the "stiffness required to implement precision cutting motion".

The very low mass of the product, alongside the elimination of cabling runs that flex with the tool head movement, also makes it an easy proposition to take up according to NUM, also making it a "very simple upgrade path" for organisations in the sector.

NUM developed its first CNC controller in the 1960s, over ten years before the CNC control was starting to become widely accepted in precision engineering.
