New innovation centre partners with ITC

Story added 02 September 2009.

A new initiative by Southampton Solent University has seen the institution partnering up with a precision engineering firm to enhance its new facilities.

The leading maritime university will use the new Solent Centre for Design and Innovation to aid with its aerospace and boat prototypes and has invested in a five-axis CNC machine tool, which has been enhanced by cutting tools from ITC to aid with rapid prototyping.

Solent University Projects & Deliveries Manager Gordon Brand stated that ITC cutters have massively helped the organisation, with previous tooling not matching up to the standards set by the firm's offerings.

He explained: "The introduction of ITC cutters enabled us to drastically increase feeds and speeds and this reduced lengthy cycle times for complex components.

"The cutters also improved our surface finishes, this reduced the need for secondary hand finishing of boat hulls and similar models and components that demanded impeccable surface finishes."

Southampton Solent University was granted its status in 2004 and has 17,000 students under its supervision and training, with one notable alumnus being Jonathan Ross.
