North-east CNC machining company 'shows continued success'

A defence trade show was the turning point of a small CNC machining company in the north-east of England and since then it has never looked back, it has been stated.

Springwell Precision Engineering visited the Defence Systems and Equipment International Exhibition in London in 2001 where owners Philip and Peter Gatens attended to see if they were able to get any leads for business, according to the Northern Echo.

Based in Washington, Wearside, the company went from a nine-person operation turning over £500,000 in 2004 to one which has 30 employees and has a turnover of £2.5 million a year, emphasising the popularity of the trade with civil engineering projects across the country.

Commenting on the company's rise to prominence, Philip Gatens said of his first major contract: "It gave us confidence to invest in plant and equipment. We have invested £1.3 million since 2004. It gave lenders confidence to lend.

"It is clear that a relatively small defence contract, giving five years' stability, helped us to gain a lot."

The company specialises in the use of CNC lathes, producing complex components and large batch production requirements.
