UK manufacturing and motorsport is 'envy of the world'

The recent success of British-based Brawn GP and its F1 championship-winning home-grown driver Jenson Button has underlined the strength of precision engineering and its associated skills in the UK, according to a new report.

Based in Brackley, Northamptonshire, the team established by former Ferrari and Benetton technical director Ross Brawn went on to storm its inaugural season, yet only outdid another British rival in the McLaren partnership with Lewis Hamilton.

Yet the Daily Telegraph's Andrew Baker believes that rivals from around the world are getting in on the UK manufacturing and precision engineering action.

He explained: "With the notable exception of Ferrari, Formula One teams who base themselves outside the UK rarely prosper.

"France's Renault build their cars in the Cotswolds, close to all the British F1 teams and their constantly-shifting talent base of mechanics, engineers and designers."

The battle for second place is still on in the F1 championship, with the final leg of the racing championship in Abu Dhabi seeing second-placed Sebastian Vettel duking it out with veteran Rubens Barrichello for the runner-up position.
