UK manufacturing given 'major boost'

MPs have added more backing to British manufacturing excellence after business minister Pat McFadden announced an increase in government funding for a new manufacturing technology centre.

Investment will be boosted to £40 million as part of the Manufacturing Strategy.

The government is investing in such things as the MTC and other facilities to realise the opportunities provided by a transition to a low carbon economy, as well as a move to high-tech and high value-added manufacturing, which could give the industry new opportunities in the modern climate.

A spokesperson for the Engineering Employers Federation said that the announcement was a "welcome emphasis" on high-value manufacturing, such as precision engineering, which is the "way forward" for the sector as a whole.

He continued: "Both [the] industry and government has to focus on innovative, high skill manufacturing if we are to rebalance our economy, and support our industrial base and measures such as this will help support this process."
