UK manufacturing is 'recovering'

The UK manufacturing scene appears to be recovering, according to a new poll.

In the Purchasing Managers' Index carried out by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS) and Markit, it was discovered that the UK manufacturing sector started Q4 2009 on "solid footing".

It was added that a solid domestic market underpinned a sharp acceleration in new business growth while input price inflation gained power and reached a 13-month high.

David Noble, the chief executive officer at the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply, said that it appears the manufacturing sector is turning a corner and starting to pull itself out of current economic downturn.

He explained that after this long and deep recession, manufacturers - including precision engineering firms using CNC machining techniques - are reporting stronger growth in both new orders and output.

"However, the sector has been so hard hit since the recession began that it will be a long time before it returns to its previous level," he continued. "Manufacturing is still fragile and will be highly vulnerable for some time to come."

In 1992, CIPS was awarded with a Royal Charter to recognise its status as a "centre of excellence" and underlining how it supports the profession.
