Ward CNC Shows that Big is Beautiful

Story added 15 February 2012.

Big is beautiful’ will be the message at MACH on the Ward CNC of Sheffield (www.wardcnc.com) stand – the six large-capacity machines filling the massive 500 m2 display area will include the UK launch of the Hankook BB550 Hanturn big bore (550 mm) chucker-type CNC lathe that boasts a powerful 45 kW spindle motor and 7,536 Nm spindle torque.

Ward CNC’s showcase of its ability to not only supply but also to provide unrivalled service and back up for large-capacity, cost-competitive machine tools from its world-leading principals’ ranges will also be centred around the display of the:

[] Hyundai-Wia L700LMA slant bed universal CNC turning centre

[] Hyundai-Wia KBN-135CL travelling column horizontal boring and milling centre

[] Hankook VTC-140/E vertical boring and turning machine

[] Soraluce FL-8000 floor-type milling centre

[] Hartford Pro-3210 double column vertical machining centre.

Ward CNC is the exclusive UK distributor for Hankook (horizontal and vertical lathes), Hartford (double-column and open fronted machining centres), Hyundai-Wia (turning and machining centres) and Soraluce (traveling column/table milling centres).

The Hankook heavy-duty BB550 CNC lathe has X and Z axes travels of 670 mm and 1,100 mm, respectively, plus an extra-wide (1,320 mm) one-piece Meehanite cast iron bed (5,210 mm long) that is complemented by a robust box-type headstock to guarantee stable performance for a machine that has 1,100 mm swing over the bed and 600 mm over the carriage.

Other features include: two-step gear change for high-torque machining at low speed; box-type saddle and 600 mm cross slide; rigid six-tool turret for heavy-duty turning, boring and threading; and rapid traverse rates of 4 m/min in X and 6 m/min in Z.

Continuing the turning theme, the Hyundai-Wia L700LMA slant bed universal CNC turning centre boasts C axis and driven tools. Again of one-piece heavy-duty cast iron construction for high accuracy and rigidity, the 610 mm chuck diameter machine can accommodate bar of 165 mm diameter and has a maximum turning diameter of 920 mm and length of 3,250 mm, and swings over the bed and cross slide of 1,050 mm and 820 mm, respectively.

Travel in X and Z axes are 500 mm and 3,280 mm, respectively, and feed rate in both X and Z is 12 m/min. The 1,500 revs/min 45/37 kW spindle is enhanced by a 12-tool turret (indexing time is just 0.4 sec) and driven tool speed is 3,000 revs/min from the 11/7.5 kW drive.

Also from Ward CNC’s extensive Hyundai-Wia portfolio, the KBN-135CL is a travelling column, planer-type horizontal boring and milling centre with a 2,000 mm by 1,800 mm table – again built for heavy-duty work on components weighing up to 20,000 kgs, with one-piece cast iron bed and hardened and ground box guideways, heavy-duty three-speed high-torque spindle, and pre-tensioned and double anchored ballscrews.

The machine has X, Y, Z and W axes travels of 4,000 mm, 2,000 mm, 2,000 mm and 700 mm, respectively, and rapid traverse rates of 7 m/min (X) and 10 m/min (Y,Z,W) plus a cutting feed rate of up to 5 m/min. It boasts a 22/26 kW spindle motor and spindle speeds of 2,500 revs/min plus 60-station ATC.

The second Hankook model on display – the VTC-140/E vertical boring and turning machine - provides a heavy-duty machining platform of 31,000 kgs to handle components weighing up to 8,000 kgs on a 1.4 m table that can achieve 320 revs/min from the 45/37 kW motor. Maximum turning diameter and height are 1,600 mm and 1,400 mm, respectively, and the cross rail has 700 mm of vertical travel.

The milling spindle motor is rated at 18.5/15 kW to produce up to 3,000 revs/min, while 3.3 revs/min are attained via the 7 kW C axis motor, which has a programmable feed rate between 0 and 1,200 deg/min and can index within 0.001 deg. The 24-tool ATC accommodates tools of 50 kgs.

The construction principles of the Soraluce FL-8000 floor-type milling-boring centre typify the philosophy of this world-leading machine builder; a combination of high-quality build – the characteristic stability and rigidity are derived from the heavy-duty cast iron construction - and technologically advanced features for unmatched heavy-duty milling performance.

With 7,500 mm in X, up to 2,200 mm in Y and 1,300 mm in Z, the 43 kW machine boasts spindle speeds up to 6,000 revs/min and rapid traverse rates of 35 m/min in all axes. The FL-8000’s ATC options extend up to 60 tools, and the machine can accommodate a range of heads – universal, orthogonal and fixed horizontal – to further enhance its multi-purpose use.

Ward CNC will also be able to provide details of a number of recent Soraluce innovations, including: the Dynamic CNC Ram balance system for the automatic correction of the effects of spindle droop when the quill of the machine is advanced to its fully extended position anywhere within its working envelope; the Accur head calibration system, which compensates for any positional deviation of the milling head following exchange and indexing; and the Modular Quill development of a fully automatic head and quill changing system that combines the benefits of traditional boring machines with the latest milling machine technology. The system enables automatic interchange of standard heads with quill spindles between 130 mm and 180 mm diameter and between 700 mm and 1,000 mm in length.

Last, but not least, Ward CNC’s MACH stand will also showcase the Hartford Blockbuster Pro-3210 double column vertical machining centre which, with its 3,150 mm by 2,040 mm table, can handle precision work on components weighing 8,000 kgs - courtesy of its one-piece cast iron bed/box guideways construction for rigid machining.

The machine has X, Y and Z axes of 3,050 mm by 2,100 mm by 1,070 mm and rapid traverse rates of 12 m/min in all axes. Cutting feed rates of 7,000 revs/min complement a spindle speed of 6,000 revs/min from the 22/30 kW motor. The machine has a 32-tool automatic toolchanger.

Ward CNC’s MACH stand will also be able to provide details of the Ward CNC Finance and Ward CNC Retrofit Divisions.
