Figures released by the Office for National Statistics show that total manufacturing output was up 4.9 per cent in July compared with the same period last year, this goes some way to confirming that manufacturing is currently experiencing the best year-on-year performance in fifteen years and has now been labeled “the strongest picture since December 1994.” by the ONS.
The biggest contribution to the growth comes from the machinery and equipment industries, who were up 17.7%. In comparison the transport industry sector continued its difficult year and was down 3.2 per cent. On a quarterly basis, manufacturing output was up 0.9 per cent from May to July.
Recognising the importance of 'manufacturing' within our economy, Business Minister Mark Prisk commented on these statistics.
"We need to be cautious as manufacturing activity may slow over the coming months but I am most encouraged that the sector continues to be more productive," he said.
