Manufacturing and product design diploma starts in September
Story added 02 July 2009.
A qualification aimed at 14 to 19-year-olds is being introduced to help improve the
precision engineering and
CNC machining skills of the next generation.
Starting in September, the Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design (MPD) will be introduced to 28 areas of the UK to provide a more hands-on alternative to GCSEs and A-levels, giving youngsters real skills for what is largely predicted to be a future business area within Britain.
Paul Turnbull, who has been working with the government to create this course in his capacity as an expert with manufacturing skills council Semta, explained that the flexibility of the course - which can even allow for a modern language to be learned - sets people up perfectly for the workplace.
He continued: "This offers students the widest possible choice of future paths, preparing them for further academic study in college or university, and gives them the chance to gain qualifications that will be recognised in the workplace if they choose to seek a job or further vocational training through an apprenticeship or similar."
According to the Department for Children, Schools and Families, functional English, maths, IT and other skills will also form an intrinsic part of the MPD.
