'Optimistic outlook' for precision engineering

Story added 13 November 2008.

The future of the precision engineering industry in the UK is optimistic, one expert says.

Despite the turbulent economy facing the country over the next few years, engineering sector marketing firm Energi Technical believes business owners have reason to be positive about the future.

Managing director Richard Blackburn says the precision engineering sector took a "real bashing" during the 1980s and 1990s and points out that those firms that are still around are made of "pretty tough stuff".

Speaking to Business Weekly, he adds: "Moreover, these companies are run by very capable businessmen, businessmen that have survived and grown their businesses with minimal support from the government or EU coffers."

There are many precision engineering firms in the UK that have grown organically and invested carefully for the future, he explains.

As well as this, the sector will be an important source of employment for years to come, particularly in the east of England, Mr Blackburn states.

This week, Norwich-based precision engineering firm Acro celebrated its move into milling machine work.

Since investing in a vertical machining centre last year, the firm has "been busy every day" since.
