NTK Runs Rings Around Competition With JX1 Insert Grade..

Added to MTDCNC by NTK Cutting Tools on 08 November 2015

The performance of NTK's new JX1 insert grade has proven a revelation for manufacturers in the aerospace sector machining difficult to cut alloys. One particular OEM customer has been machining Rene 41 rings for aero engine casings and witnessing poor productivity levels and tool life.

However, the introduction of the NTK JX1 grade to the 28.5inch diameter ring with a machining length of 4.2inches is now yielding increased productivity and tool life for the aero OEM. Previously, this customer was using whisker ceramic inserts for the finish machining of the rings. Running the whisker ceramic tools at a surface speed of 1000SFM with a feed rate of 0.008IPT at a depth of cut of 0.02 inches, the insert would achieve a tool life of two components before burning out.

The arrival of the JX1 has enabled the aerospace OEM to improve productivity by 35% with an increased cutting speed of 1500SFM. Simultaneously, the tool life has been more than doubled with the customer now producing 5 components per insert edge as opposed to its previous best of two parts per insert edge. For this customer, the finishing process of these pre-machined Rene rings has been significantly improved with a reduced inventory requirement.
