New Protodyn HSC solid carbide thread former

The new Protodyn HSC solid carbide thread former available from tooling giant Walter GB of Bromsgrove enables high-quality threads to be produced at speeds of up to twice as fast as traditional HSS tools and with extended tool life of more than three times conventional counterparts.

Such benefits are possible through the use of a newly developed substrate, an innovative cutting geometry and the optimised polygonal form of the tool&rsquos forming edges.

The new substrate is a micrograin variety having a high degree of hardness and toughness, resulting in high stability. The new cutting geometry means that all forming edges participate evenly in the forming process, resulting in even wear distribution. The new polygonal form minimises friction and heat between tool and material.

Field experiments have demonstrated the prowess of Walter&rsquos new tool: for one formed component, the number of threads created using a Protodyn HSC thread former was increased to 90,000 compared to 20,000 with the previously used tool - a 350 per cent increase in tool life &ndash and the 90,000 threads were formed with a time saving of two hours.

In other applications: on a connecting rod, the tool life of Protodyn HSC extended by 300 per cent compared to the previously used thread former and the number of threads produced on a crankshaft increased by almost four times per tool while tool life was increased by 280 per cent and machining time was reduced by 25 per cent.

The Walter Protodyn HSC can be used on a broad spectrum of steels, stainless steels and aluminiums with a silicon content below 12 per cent. The tool achieves its best results with thread pitches of 1.5 mm.
