The MTD team has recently been to the Leigh UTC in Dartford, Kent to take a look at the machines  that have been provided by RK International, a company that has invested £350,000 in supporting the college.

After opening its doors for the first time at the start of the academic year in September 2014, the training facility currently has its first batch of students passing through the college. The Principal of the UTC, Mr Stephen Leahey told MTD: 'For 3 years I have been project managing the training college with a sole purpose to work with industry to build a fantastic facility that we could equip with the equipment that will help us to provide the trainees with engineering skills they will need for a future in industry.'

'RK International is a company that we have worked with before on previous installations and from day one we wanted to work with them because their machines are used widely in industry. We knew that if we could equip our facility with RK International machines, we would be giving students training on machines they will find in industry.'

'We recognise there is a skill shortage in manufacturing and we are trying to bring boys and girls with an interest in engineering into the facility to provide them with the knowledge to work in industry and bridge the shortfall in skilled engineers.'

RK International's Sales & Marketing Manager, Mr Simon Rood says: 'We aim to introduce engineering companies to the UTC and vice versa whilst showing local companies the latest machine tools that are available from RK International. To do this, RK International has dedicated over £350,000 of machine tools to the UTC. This includes manual and CNC machine tools that are now being used by the students. This gives the students at the UTC a working knowledge of machines being used in industry with Fanuc and Heidenhain controls. We are also providing technical support and training to the technicians and lecturers at the college.'

From a student perspective, a number of students commented that the UTC is an outstanding facility with state-of-the-art machine tools and equipment that delivers structured training that coincides with field trips to local industry to provide a complete understanding of the manufacturing environment.
