Making its contribution to the future of the manufacturing sector, Romi is delighted to be sponsoring the Worldskills Contest in Sao Paulo, Brazil 2015. Formally recognised as the Skills Olympics, Romi has committed its machine tools and resources to training the engineers of tomorrow by providing over 65 GL-Series turning centres and D-Series VMC's during the competition.

The latest installation to support the prestigious event was commissioned last week at Coleg Llandrillo Cymru in Rhos-on-sea, North Wales. By receiving the remarkably productive, flexible and user friendly D-600 vertical machining centre, students at the college can prepare for the marquee event.

Purchased specifically for training students in preparation for the upcoming WorldSkills contest, the competition will see apprentices from 60 countries test their skills against each other to win the gold medal. The format of the competition will see the selected  apprentice from each of the participating countries be supplied a drawing & material. From this, the young engineers will have a set amount of time to produce the component from the drawing using the machine. This will then be CMM checked and scored accordingly, whereby the apprentice with the highest score wins the gold.

The apprentices will need an outstanding grounding in engineering where they will have to interpret engineering drawings and follow the specification. Competitors will have to demonstrate the ability to organize and establish process planning, apply different methods and techniques to generate a program, use different measuring tools & gauging instruments, set-up and run a CNC milling machine and also optimize the machining process.

For Coleg Llandrillo Cymru, the students will have an excellent foundation and preparation for the event by training on the new Romi D-600 machining centre. The fast, flexible and extremely precise machining centre is fast becoming the machine of choice for many manufacturers and whether the college trainees reach the dizzy heights of gold medal status or not, they will undoubtedly be well prepared for an exciting future in the manufacturing sector after training on a Romi machine tool.
