Team WNT targets rapid success

Added to MTDCNC by WNT (UK) Ltd on 03 March 2015

The official launch of Team WNT Elite Women’s Cycle Team is the beginning of an ambitious project that is targeting rapid success in the British Women’s Tour Series and the British Women’s National Road Series.

The two series will see Team WNT competing in televised town centre closed road criteriums as well as the nine rounds of the road series that includes stage races, one day races and circuit races. Team WNT has enticed some significant cycling power and talent to join its ranks with 2010 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, and 2014 Commonwealth Games representative for Scotland, Charline Joiner, who will share the team leader role across the two series with four-times National Champion Hannah Walker.

The rest of the Elite team is Lydia Boylan, who was part of Ireland’s 4km Team Pursuit at the recent Track Cycling World Championships in Paris, Shrewsbury GP winner Brit Tate, Becca Carter, Lauryn Therin (Gold and bronze medallist in the 2015 Newport Para-Cycling International event)  and Jo Tindley. Supporting the Elite riders will be a development team consisting of Sam Burman, Rose Osbourne, and Sophie Lankford who, along with regional riders Elisa McDonagh and Victoria Williams, will continue to develop their riding skills as part of the larger group, stepping up to the Elite team as and when required.

Speaking of WNT’s involvement in this new team WNT (UK)’s Managing Director, Tony Pennington says: "We dipped our toe into cycle sponsorship last year by supporting Sam Burman (who we also sponsor in motorcycle racing) and a small team in order to gain a better understanding of Women’s cycling. Having witnessed the excitement and passion involved it was a logical step to increase our participation. With the launch of the Team WNT Elite Womens cycle team we are excited at the prospect of competing at the highest level in British cycling and with such a strong team we are extremely hopeful of success in our first season.

"As a company we are passionate about cycling and host a variety of cycling events both here in the UK and across Europe. We fully intend to maximise our involvement with Team WNT by extending invitations to customers to attend races as our guests. We see this as an extension of the partnerships we have already created with customers such as Hope Technology, and our investment in the team will provide opportunities for our customers to become involved, while providing a boost for women’s cycling in the UK."

The ambition of the Team management and also of WNT is to see Team WNT develop and grow with sights already set on entering selected European events in 2015 and the possibility of stepping up to European level and then World level in the very near future if results go as anticipated.  Confirming the serious nature of the Team WNT challenge this season is its commitment to source the best available kit for its riders, a decision that was a major influence on some of them signing with the team. Typical of this is the choice of bike, with every rider having a personalised Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL4 with custom team graphics. Constructed from FACT 11r carbon, the S-Works Tarmac SL4 is an out and out road race frame with the ability to climb, descend, and be in the bunch sprint at the end of a race. It also features a full monocoque FACT carbon fork with tapered carbon steerer providing great torsional rigidity for high-speed handling.

Marcus Nainby, Team Manager, Team WNT says "With the support of WNT where there is a great passion for cycling we are excited by the season that lies ahead for Team WNT. The team has been created to compete at the highest level in UK cycling and with the support of WNT and partners, such as Hope Technology, we continue to work hard behind the scenes to ensure that our roster of experienced and talented riders will have the support and infrastructure needed to allow us to challenge for the podium at every race we enter. With the quality of equipment and the support vehicles that WNT’s involvement has allowed us to achieve we are very well placed to take on the well-established teams that are already competing at British level. With the ambition and backing of WNT we are in for an exceptional first season at this level and the prospect of taking the big leap into European and World series in the near future we all have significant incentives to succeed from day one."
