NCMT, the sole UK and Ireland agent for machining centres and lathes built by Okuma, Japan, will demonstrate standard machine tools producing gears to extremely high accuracy during seminars at its Coventry technical centre on 27th and 28th June. NCMT’s engineering director Adrian Maughan says, “There is an increasing interest in producing gearboxes that are more compact, lighter and more efficient. 

“The flexibility, high productivity and lower investment cost offered by producing gears on multi-tasking machines from Okuma, coupled with their high levels of accuracy and repeatability, makes them ideal for the purpose.

“This is not just rhetoric. We will demonstrate the level of precision attainable by machining various gear types and then measuring them on our Leitz CMM equipped with the latest Quindos software.”

The seminars will focus on three methods of manufacture, a principal one being Power Skiving, which is dedicated to cutting a gear in large volumes to high accuracy. Another is InvoMilling, a flexible solution which is capable of producing different modules using the same standard milling tool. Finally, gear hobbing using a carbide inserted hob cutter will be demonstrated. 

All demonstrations will be performed on an Okuma Multus U3000 2SW turn-mill centre. In the case of Power Skiving, this will also run on the newly-introduced Okuma MU4000V-L 5-axis vertical machining centre. NCMT believes that its latest combination of hardware and software running on Okuma platforms places it at the forefront of global multi-tasking gear production.

Okuma is highly unusual in that it manufactures practically every part of its machines, including the spindle and drives, rotary encoders with a 36 million increment resolution, AbsoScale linear encoders guaranteeing 0.1 micron feedback and even the proprietary OSP control system. Additionally, the manufacturer’s Thermo-Friendly concept helps maintain the accuracy of the entire machine tool, even in environments where temperature variation of up to 8°C occurs.
