EMO 2013 is XYZ's launch pad for further European presence

EMO 2013 is the launch pad for XYZ Machine Tools to extend its penetration of mainland Europe through its German distributor FLOTT.

At the exhibition XYZ is to show representations of its lathe and milling machine ranges in hall 16, stand F16 and follows the recent appointment of Andrew Kilshaw as export sales manager.  Mr Kilshaw is charged to adapt the highly successful UK sales branding strategy to meet European needs around local showrooms (XYZ currently has six in UK) to see machine demonstrations and help with customer training and application engineering.

Machines under power will include a Proturn SLX 425 flat bed lathe with ProtoTRAK CNC, a Compact Turn 52 LTY CNC lathe with driven tools, an SMX 4000 bed mill using the latest Verify and Parasolid software options  and a five-axis variant of the XYZ 710 vertical machining centre with high specification Siemens 840D Sl control.  In order to create on-the-spot awareness to visitors of the simplicity of programming the XYZ ProtoTRAK controls on its lathes and milling machines, continuous demonstrations will be provided throughout the exhibition’s six days.

Said Mr Kilshaw: “EMO could not be at a better time to up the beat on XYZ’s presence in Europe.  The ProtoTRAK is the easiest CNC control I have ever come across thus making it the most cost-effective investment any prototype/small batch manufacturer could make.  When our specification, pricing structure and proven customer support strategy is compared against others in our market, we feel we have a lot to offer and will be very competitive.”

The Proturn SLX 425 is a top-selling gap bed lathe in the UK with 80 mm spindle bore, 480 mm swing over bed and either 1,250 or 2,000 mm between centres on a single piece cast base. The 15 kW main spindle Compact Turn 52 LTY CNC lathe has a 52 mm bar capacity, 62 mm spindle bore with 200 mm 3-jaw chuck.  It is shown with driven tools, parts-catcher, swarf conveyor and hydraulic tailstock, all contained within a floor area of 3,110 mm by 2,200 mm.

The ProtoTRAK SMX 4000 bed mill has the flexibility offering a manual quill feed or a programmable head for the 5.75 kW, ISO 40 spindle to machine angled holes and surfaces.  It has a table area of 1,470 mm by 356 mm and travels of 1,000 mm by 596 mm by 540 mm.

Key latest optional features which will be demonstrated at EMO as part of the SMX’s ProtoTRAK control are the Verify and Parasolid visual representations. Here, Verify supplements toolpath functions showing where each tool will machine the part with the ability to rotate the solid model to confirm areas such as tool depths and to help avoid collision situations.  Meanwhile, Parasolid allows solid model data to be directly imported into the ProtoTRAK control to enable the machinist to work straight from the design and interrogate the model to access key data.

Five-axis machining demonstrations will be performed using the high precision Swiss-built Lehmann compact rotary/tilt table unit integrated with the XYZ 710 vertical machining centre under Siemens 840D Sl control .  The machine has a 15 kW, 8,000 revs/min (12,000 revs/min option) spindle, 24 tool magazine, rigid box section slideways and 20 m/min rapid traverse.  Travels are 710 mm by 450 mm by 500 mm with a table size of 760 mm by 430 mm.
