A leading manufacturing and engineering recruitment consultancy is launching a major new engineering graduate scheme in a bid to tackle the skills shortage which has dogged the sector for many years.

Stratford-upon-Avon based Consilium Recruit has teamed up with six Midlands universities to provide high calibre engineering, science and manufacturing graduate trainees to the regions major employers, as well as smaller companies struggling to attract the right talent and skills.

Consilium, which also has offices in Stourport, boasts a division of the company specifically aimed at recruiting highly skilled engineers, managers and advanced manufacturing technicians. Now the consultancy has initially teamed up with Leicester de Montfort,  Aston, Nottingham Trent, Derby, Wolverhampton and Coventry universities to launch ConsiliumGraduate.

ConsiliumGraduate will be formally launched at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Midlands Engineering dinner at the ICC on March 11. Consilium will be co-sponsoring the event for the third year running. The dinner will incorporate IMechE's Young Engineer Networking Event hosted by industry leaders and event sponsors.

The scheme will identify high calibre graduates with the right skills, who will typically be BEng or BSc graduates with a range of professionally accredited and industry relevant degrees. Graduates with a talent for innovation will be identified, as will those with core engineering discipline abilities.

These candidates will then go through a detailed assessment before they are offered to the most appropriate employer - large or small - seeking their skills. ComsiliumGraduate also offers assessment events, on-board consultation to help companies get the best out of their graduate schemes, and expert help for companies new to graduate recruitment.

Consilium associate director James Colley who is leading the initiative, said the firm had an enviable track record of attracting, assessing and recruiting high quality graduates for some of the UK's most exciting employers including high-technology start-ups and SMEs in addition to international engineering groups.

‘With demand for talent at an all-time high, we are able to use our experience and capabilities to ensure that the pool of willing, educated and enthusiastic youngsters coming through our universities finds the best and most appropriate home. Our close links with the engineering and science faculties of these universities will help us to identify not just engineers with much-needed core skills, but also those with high-end innovation skills which can help employers with hard-to-fill posts requiring exceptional talent,’ he said.

Consilium Recruit - celebrating its 15th anniversary this year - was formed in 2001 by a group of engineering and manufacturing professionals. The company has placed industry talent into a variety of leading UK and European businesses, with clients including Jaguar Land Rover, McLaren, Ben Ainslie Racing and Bosch.

As well as its Stratford-upon-Avon base the Group has an office in Stourport-on-Severn. In 2014 the 40-employee firm was voted the UK’s Best Recruitment Company to Work for by the Institute of Recruitment Professionals, and also recognised nationally as a top 10 company by the prestigious Great Places to Work Institute.
