The UK's automotive manufacturing sector reached a 16-year high in the first half of 2016. Over 900,000 cars rolled off production lines over the first half of the years, marking a 13% rise compared to the same period in 2015.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the figures were the best first half year figures since the turn of the millennium.  Almost 78% of UK built cars were destined for foreign markets.

The SMMT’s chief executive, Mr Mike Hawes claimed the outlook for UK car production was uncertain in the light of the recent Brexit vote. However, the current signs are positive and the UK automotive sector has enjoyed a refreshing period of growth. In June, vehicle production climbed by 10.4% to 159,000 vehicles, the best June figures for 18 years.
