Thame Workholding expand with automated 5 axis machining cell

Thame Workholding expand with automated 5 axis machining cell

Added to MTDCNC by Thame Workholding on 16 June 2013

A recent significant investment in 5 axis technology is set to significantly increase output at one of the UK's most well known workholding solution providers. Thame Workholding have just taken delivery of their new Matsuura 5 axis machining centre. This new addition to their already extensive capacity will equip Thame with an ultra productive cell, machining both jaws and other products from their popular ranges.

Impressively this new cell is a completely automated set-up, the 5 axis machining centre is sited and positioned with a Lang Automation system by its side providing a one-hit milling cell. Being the UK supplier of Lang products, this new installation carries more than just production benefits.

Director Maurice Day explains:

'We're all very excited about the prospect of not only improving production at Thame but also having a working model of Langs popular Automation system, we've already got engineers planning to visit us in order to witness Lang's unique method of adding automation to a machine tool'

'Our initial plan is to utilise the cell solution to machine our range of Jaws unmanned overnight. At the moment our chuck jaw production is multi-operational and takes place on various machines, with the new Matsuura these additional operations will be eliminated and jaws will be machined in just two operations.

'Aswell as reducing operations, the introduction of this level of technology at Thame will also open new doors on many of our other products.  Taking a walk around Thame's shopfloor highlights how this business believes in manufacturing. Housing dozens of vertical machining centres, horizontal machining  centres, lathes and grinding machines; milling, turning and grinding is always done in-house.

Thame's port-folio of products includes Vacuum workholding, Chuck Jaws, Lang Vice products, Samchully Chucks and cubes. A business founded over 67 years ago also builds on continued success by supplying tailored be-spoke workholding solutions aswell.

'Engineers can call Thame and be assured we will solve their workholding issues. We not only supply off the shelf products, we also have the ability and knowhow to provide be-spoke workholding solutions for turning and milling applications. We regularly design and build fixtures for companies manufacturing multiple volume components where sometimes the flexiblity of standard equipment is not needed.

'2013 is looking like another great year for Thame, so far sales have exceeded that of 2012 and later in the year we will be launching a range of new products  complimenting our current offerings' concluded Maurice.
