Ageing Boring Machine Performance Restored to 'As New' by Dorries Scharmann Retrofit

Added to MTDCNC by Starrag UK Limited on 29 March 2016

The retrofit by Starrag Group company, Dörries Scharmann, of a 30-year-old Wotan Rapid large-capacity borer has restored the machine’s operation “;to as good as original”; but at half the cost of buying a comparable new machine. The project also avoided the added expense and headaches inherent with machine replacement, including excavating and laying new foundations.

Used by Schuler to machine huge gear wheels and drive components for its market-leading range of presses, the Rapid 6 – which is fitted with a rotary table for multi-face machining – was showing its age and, says Schuler, “;it was only thanks to the resourcefulness of our operators that we continued to produce parts of the required quality”;.

The successful retrofit has not only seen Dörries Scharmann enhance the machine’s original mechanical components with state-of-the-art electronics, but a crucial part of the specification also meant Dörries Scharmann had to ensure a maximum variation of just 60 microns over the machine’s entire 10 metres X axis – which was achieved.

In addition, a new table saddle was fitted and the original double pinion drive, which was powered only on one side, was replaced by a new pinion drive with two electronically-tensioned drives. Also, a new 6 bar compressed air tank was fitted for aerostatic guidance of the rotary table.

Schuler Presses UK offers comprehensive services for mechanical and hydraulic presses made by Schuler and many other Schuler-owned press brands, as well as for presses made by other manufacturers. Its customer base extends across automotive OEMs and their suppliers, appliance manufacturers, forging companies, the defence industry, electric motor and lamination manufacturers, and general metal pressings companies.
