For chamfering and spot drilling holes prior to tapping operations, Advanced Carbide Tooling (ACT) has now launched the new W Spotting series of cutting tools from Nine9. This radical new concept eliminates the requirement for spot drilling and chamfering and the respective tools and replaces this laborious process with one tool that spots and chamfers in one operation.

The W Spotting tools can significantly reduce cycle times by eliminating one operation in the tapping process whilst improving the positional accuracy for the subsequent drilling operations. The unique new W Spotting Series incorporates an insert with a fully ground cutting edge and relief angle plus a multi-purpose tool-holder that can accommodate the W Spotting inserts as well as inserts from the Nine9 series of NC Spot Drills.

The innovative new insert geometry has an 145 degree cutting angle and 90 degree chamfer angle to deliver precise positioning for the drill as well as the industry standard angle for a chamfer. The K20F insert grade is TiAlN coated to provide a universal grade that can perform well on cast iron, stainless steel, alloy steel and carbon steels.

The new innovation from Nine9 provides two cutting edges on each insert to reduce tooling costs whilst reducing tooling inventory, improving positional accuracy and process stability. With five insert designations to cater for M4, M5, M6, M8, M10 threads, the varying geometries permit the W Spotting inserts to cut to a maximum diameter from 8 to 13mm with a maximum cutting depth of 4.11mm. For the machining of imperial threads, the W Spotting series is available in three designations for ¼, 5/16 and 3/8 UNC threads.

The toolholders for the W Spotting series are available in shank diameters of 10 or 16mm and for imperial set-ups a 3/8 and 5/8 diameter. The 10mm diameter toolholder accepts inserts for tapped holes from M4 to M6 whilst the 16mm diameter toolholder is suitable for threads from M8 to M10.  The respective diameter toolholders have an overall length of 89 and 97.5mm for optimal rigidity and performance.
