Dah Lih Enter Compact Five Axis Machining Market

Dah Lih Enter Compact Five Axis Machining Market

Added to MTDCNC by Ward Hi Tech Limited on 25 July 2013

Dah Lih, a long-time specialist in the design and manufacture of ‘C’ frame and portal-type machining centres with large table areas is launching the smallest five-axis model in its range – the DMX-320. Available from UK distributor Ward Hi-Tech, the new machine features a unique structural design to deliver exceptional levels of rigidity and stability that belie its compact size. The machine will suit any manufacturer producing complex, high quality machined parts to exacting tolerances.

Despite a footprint of just 2.85 by 2.8 metres, the new Dah Lih DMX-320 five-axis vertical machining centre features an extra wide column base that provides an extremely solid foundation for precision machining. Furthermore, all major castings are designed using FEA (finite element analysis) software to ensure maximum machine rigidity and cutting accuracy, while impressive span on both the Z-axis and Y-axis linear ways also helps guarantee stability.

Other build quality initiatives include the fact that the feed system on three axes is of separate construction that helps reduce ballscrew length while ensuring exceptional rotational inertia during high speed cutting – 10,000, 12,000 and 15,000 rpm direct drive or built-in spindle options are available.

A tilting and rotating table (0.001°) facilitates the fourth and fifth axes, although again there are innovative features that distinguish the DMX-320 from competitor machines. For example, the design of the intensifier eliminates the requirement for a hydraulic power unit as it needs only air to produce braking force, thus reducing running costs. In addition, the tilting axis (+30° to -120°) makes use of a double-sided expansion brake for increased braking force while at the same time minimising vibration.

With regard to specification, a 320mm diameter table that can accommodate workpieces weighing up to 150kg is served by X, Y and Z-axis travels of 600, 550 and 500mm respectively. There is also a 24-station automatic toolchanger, BT40 spindle and a host of other impressive standard features, not to mention many optional extras to suit even the most demanding of requirements.

Dah Lih machines have been sold in the UK for more than 30 years, during which time the company has built an enviable reputation. The DMX-320 is yet another

example of Dah Lih’s impressive investment in R&D, bringing to market a high specification model at a competitive price to ensure it remains one of the UK’s

best selling machine tool brands.
