Designed for the cost-effective machining of large workpieces weighing up to a massive 250 tonnes for a wide range of industries, including power generation and die and mouldmaking, Droop + Rein machining centres and milling machines are of necessarily rigid construction to suit such heavyweight work and they can be tailored specifically to suit user requirements.

Available from Starrag UK, the range of multi-functional gantry-style machining centres and mills, as well as high-speed machining centres, includes the series TFS, T/TF, G/GF and FOGS/FOGS D40 models available with either Heidenhain or Siemens CNC.

The universal Droop + Rein D40 ram-type milling head with integral C axis (+/- 200 deg; optionally 360 deg) accommodates a variety of machining head styles, from conventional vertical spindle type through to fixed angle heads, and three-plus two-axis as well as full five-axis contouring to offer the ultimate in machining flexibility to meet varying demands. Indeed, Droop + Rein has developed more than 300 different milling heads for various applications.

Of portal-type design with fixed crossrail, the 40 kW (1,200 Nm torque) TFS machining centre can be supplied in a variety of table configurations (long, double, rotary, pallet changing) and with automatically exchangeable milling heads as well as automatic toolchanger and integrated tool and component measuring.

Table widths extend from 1,500 mm to 2,500 mm and lengths from 3,000 mm to 5,000 mm, and standard travels in X, Y and Z axes are 3,500 mm - 6,000 mm, 2,000 mm – 3,000 mm and 1,250 mm, respectively. Rapids and feed rates are up to 60 m/min and 30 m/min, respectively.

With optional automatic milling head, spindle and toolchanging units, the T/TF models enable the completion of a wide range of complex and demanding machining routines within the machine’s X, Y and Z axes, as standard, of up to 11,000 mm, 6,000 mm and 1,500 mm (optionally 2,000 mm) , respectively, plus up to 4,000 mm in W.

Spindles rated at 50, 60, 75 or 100 kW (torques up to 7,500 Nm) are available and feed and traverse rates are up to 20 m/min and 30 m/min, respectively. The machines can be supplied with a range of vertical, angled and fork-type milling heads, as well as with an adjustable crossrail (optional).

Droop + Rein’s gantry-type G/GF machines have been specifically designed for processing large, heavy and unwieldy components; the gantry design effectively prevents dynamic loss when supporting and machining such high loads. Hydrostatic guides on all linear axes, the thermo-symmetrical construction of the ram-type milling unit and the integral C axis also all contribute in this respect.

With spindle motors up to 150 kW and torques to 12,000 Nm, the machines have extensive X, Y Z and W axes capacities and appropriate pallet sizes: as standard, up to 31,000 mm in X; up to 12,000 mm in Y; to 4,000 mm in Z and up to 6,000 mm in W. Maximum feed rates are up to 10 m/min and rapid traverse is up to 20 m/min.

Completing the range is the FOGS/FOGS D40 high-speed machining centre which is designed for highly dynamic machining at optimum feed rates (30 m/min) in its X, Y and Z envelope of 3,800 mm – 41,000 mm (X), 2,500 mm – 11,000 mm (Y) and 1,500 mm – 2,500 mm (Z). Rapid traverse rates are 40 m/min.

The machines feature either a fixed floorplate with integral rotary/turning table, or traversing, indexing and turning tables, plus automatic spindle and milling head changing.
