For 5-axis machining of large and heavy components, Chorley based Design & Technical Services (DTS) has now launched the new Litz LU800 5-axis machining centre. As part of the Pro-Design range, the new LU800 is a truly heavy duty & large capacity machine with a table that can accept components up to 1000kg.

Unlike most 5-axis machines that are suited for small and lightweight components, the LU800 weighs in at 19000kg and has a gantry type configuration with a cast iron base and cast spindle housing. This demonstrates its rigidity and ability to conduct heavy machining on the most challenging of materials.

The Litz LU800 has a work envelope of 800 by 900 by 620mm in the X, Y & Z axes that provide sufficient space for components with dimensions up to 1m. The machine bed has a C –axis rotating table that can swivel 360degrees in both directions whilst the tilt of the A-axis can rotate at +/-120 degrees. One of the key features of the Litz design is the ability to retract the top of the machine back to the spindle position to simplify the loading and unloading of large and heavy components. A simple yet innovative feature, this permits easy loading of parts with a crane or forklift truck.

The solid cast spindle housing delivers a robust environment for the cutting tools to operate at a spindle speed of12000rpm with 18000rpm as an option. Combining rigidity, high speed, a direct drive spindle motor and a BT40 or optional HSK63 configuration, the Litz LU800 was developed for heavy machining applications.

With a 32 tool ATC and machine rapids of 48m/min, the LU800 provides speed and flexibility to this remarkably robust new machine tool. Providing the capability for exceptional material removal rates, Litz has configured this machine with flood coolant from both sides of the work envelope and also from the rear of the spindle to rapidly flush swarf from the work area. In addition, a through coolant facility is also available.
