High-Accuracy, Cost-Efficient VTL Work with Multi-Talented Berthiez TVU Machines

Capable of accommodating workpieces weighing up to 20,000 kgs, Berthiez vertical lathes available from Starrag UK are proving especially successful in the production of mid/large-size aerospace and power generation turbine and engine components for customers throughout the world.

Which is no surprise, since the TVU machines are of rigid one-piece cast construction and boast high-precision static and dynamic positioning.

The result is high-accuracy, cost-effective machining for a blue chip customer list that includes: Techspace (Safran) of Belgium – currently two machines linked by Fastems flexible manufacturing system that will continually be expanded to achieve a nine-machine (TVU) facility; Avio (GEC), Italy, four machines; NPO Saturn, Russia, three machines; and one machine each for Lyiang Aero Engine of China, Snecma, France, Timken Aerospace, USA and GKN Aerospace Systems, Norway.

TVU machines include models with main drives rated at 50-100 kW and with table diameters from 800 mm to 2,500 mm, swing diameters of 1,400 to 2,800 mm and turning heights from 800 mm to 2,440 mm. Table speeds are from 220 revs/min to 800 revs/min.

Importantly, TVU models can be installed as a turnkey solution for a range of production problems, in particular for machining titanium workpieces.

Pallet change systems and adaptable milling heads can be utilised to increase machine flexibility, including an optional milling spindle – rated up to 36 kW – integrated in the ram to create the ultimate multi-flexible turning centre. Starrag UK adds that an optional Y axis table traverse allows turning, milling and grinding of complex components in a single clamping.

The machines can also be equipped with high-pressure (400 bar) coolant pack that can increase turning cutting speeds by up to 200/ 300 per cent, boost tool life by up to 200 per cent and ensure excellent chip breakage.
