The debut at EMO of the ‘Kellenberger 100’ modular grinding machine concept heralds a new era for specifying and manufacturing mid-range grinding machines from the Hardinge Grinding Group.

As Mike Duignan, managing director of Leicester based Group member Jones & Shipman explains, the 100 concept brings together a wealth of technical expertise and grinding ‘know how’ that customers will benefit from.

“The strength, diversity and technical expertise of member companies in the Group cannot be under-estimated and in J&S, Kellenberger, Voumard, Hauser, Tschudin and Usach machines for virtually every grinding technique and format are available.

“Engineers at Kellenberger have utilized this wealth of knowledge and expertise resulting in the development of the Kellenberger 100 platform which incorporates key elements of Kellenberger's Vista and Vita model ranges, the Jones & Shipman Ultramat CNC and Ultragrind 1000 and the Tschudin T25, aspects of which have all been integrated into the new range.

“Also, the EASY self-teach software developed by Jones & Shipman has had a strong influence on the graphical programming side of the new newly developed software suite – replacing the former Kel-EASY – which incorporates many new features now utilizing a Fanuc31i  CNC control with 19” touchscreen for the programming,” he adds.

“The plan is we will have a top end hydrostatic range of machines supported by mid-range highly modular Kellenberger 100 models which will offer flexibility to create the ideal machine configuration for the required applications.  Options can vary from a simple number of external and/or internal spindles on the compact wheelhead, weight and features on the workhead and tailstock and many other options including in-process measurement and automation.

“The bedrock machine range will be the J&S Suprema which is a proven, highly adaptable machine equally at home in a toolroom or a volume manufacturing environment.  In effect all bases are covered.”

The new 100 platform has been designed with performance, flexibility and ease of use and maintenance in mind.  In order to minimize assembly costs Kellenberger has devised a new assembly system for the machines and technical developments such as a new guideway coating give the machine near hydrostatic performance at a much reduced cost. A compact, diagonal modular grinding wheelhead is another innovation providing collision-free universal operation for OD and ID grinding with many tool variants and configurations.

EMO will also offer visitors the opportunity to discuss the new distribution agreement for the UK and France in which J&S now exclusively represent grinding machines manufactured by the Okamoto Machine Tool Works.

Okamoto offers a comprehensive range of surface, form, internal and external cylindrical and rotary surface grinders that complement HGG technologies and which will in future be available in the UK and France from the J&S sales and product support team.

Comments Mike Duignan; “Increasingly we are providing customers with more integrated grinding solutions and many of the machines that Okamoto produce fit comfortably alongside our technologies, and indeed broaden the range.  Okamoto is a considerable force in the global grinding scene producing over 1600 grinders a year via its three factories but has not, until now, had such specialist grinding representation and support in the UK.”

The Hardinge Grinding Group is exhibiting at EMO 2017: Hall 11, Stand C78 while Okamoto are also in Hall 11 on stand C69.
