Mills CNC increase Spares Stock for Doosan Machine Tools

Mills CNC increase Spares Stock for Doosan Machine Tools

Added to MTDCNC by Mills CNC Ltd on 02 January 2013

Mills CNC, the exclusive distributor of Doosan machine tools in the UK and Ireland, has strengthened its in-house parts operation by increasing its stock of commonly-held Doosan spare and replacement parts, increasing the floor space dedicated to parts storage, retrieval and distribution, and investing in new piece-picking ‘carousel’ technology.

With an installed base of over 4000 customers that’s growing exponentially year-on-year, Mills CNC constantly invests in upgrading and streamlining its after-sales services to ensure that its customers’ machine tools’ performance and uptime are protected and maintained.

As part of its Continuous Improvement Programmes the company has recently strengthened its spare and replacement parts operation, making it more effective, more efficient and better able to meet the demands of customers.

Says Mills CNC’s Parts Manager, Mat Cooper:

‘Our parts operation is an important and integral element of our after-sales service, and this has always been the case.

‘But, owing to the phenomenal growth experienced over the last 2 – 3 years and the subsequent increase in our installed base, we recognised that we needed further investment in this area of our business.’

Through re-organisation of and investment in Mills’ warehousing facilities in Leamington some 9,000 sq ft of capacity has now been released and is designated for parts storage - translating into over £1.3M of Doosan OE parts being held in-stock.

Continues Mat Cooper:

‘When customers need a spare or replacement part for their machine - they want it immediately.

‘To meet this expectation we carry high levels of stock which are ready to be dispatched at a moment’s notice for either same-day or next day delivery, and have invested in fast and efficient piece-picking ‘carousel’ technology to speed up the process.’

But as important as fast response times are - they are not the only strengths of Mills’ parts operation.

Equally important are the competitive prices Mills is able to offer, as well as expert part identification assistance (to ensure that customers order and receive the correct part in the first instance) and further help and support with installation once the part has arrived with a customer.

Mills’ parts operation is managed by 3 full-time members of staff.

As well as responding to and assisting with customer’s parts requirements, the team also manages and administers Mills’ on-line parts ordering service (a password protected service that allows customers to order their Doosan parts on-line 24/7); provides in-depth parts support for Mills’ field-based Service Engineers, and can create machine-specific spares packages (a package of recommended spares) for every Doosan machine and therefore (in theory) for every Mills customer.

The team also works with customers to source rarer spare parts not held in stock at Leamington, and uses its influence with Doosan’s parts hub in Germany or with the Doosan factory facilities in South Korea to ensure a fast turnaround of these more ‘uncommon’ parts.

Not just parts

As well as administering Mills’ spare parts operation the team also manages the ordering and supply of ancillary (third party) equipment e.g. bar feeders, 4th/5th-axis units, mist extraction units etc.

Explains Mat Cooper:

‘We stock a comprehensive range of ancillary equipment from third party suppliers, and use our considerable purchasing power and leverage to obtain competitive prices which we then pass on to our customers.

‘So if a customer is looking to retrofit ancillary equipment to their Doosan machine we, through our parts operation, Service Department and field-based Service Engineers, can provide a total systems solution from equipment identification and sourcing right through to installation and, in the future, maintenance and servicing.

‘The additional investment we have made in our parts operation is just another example of the importance Mills places on having world-class after-sales services.’
