Ajax Machines Are Top of The Class

The importance of education is such that the famous 'Education, education, education' speech was instrumental in sweeping Labour to power almost 20 years ago. Since the famous speech, governments and leaders have been and gone, but the importance of education has remained.

Over the last decade, the curriculum has been seriously overhauled to bridge the gap between industry and the perceived shortcomings of higher education.  This is where machine tool vendors such as Ajax Machine Tools have stepped in, to move colleges and universities from the 'vice and file' to the world of intuitive and user friendly CNC and manual machines that are relevant to the demands of modern industry.

You only have to consider how much emphasis the current government and its opposition is putting on apprenticeships to realise that this is a huge area for growth. Ajax, is perfectly positioned for both supply to higher education establishments and universities with its extensive range of machine solutions and CNC control options. Its unique position in the marketplace has seen the Lymington company work with many colleges in recent months with dozens of other schools, colleges and universities buying machine tools from Ajax in recent years.

Highlighting why Ajax machine tools are the primary choice for the education sector, Ajax's Mr Ian Fenton says: ‘’We are chosen by the education industry for a number of reasons. Firstly, our choice of machines. They range from manual milling, drilling, turning, surface and cylindrical grinding centres through to manual/CNC teach machines through to full CNC machining and turning centres. However, our scope goes even further as we also supply general workshop machines such as bench, pedestal and belt grinders, sawing and slotting machines through to sheet metal machinery such as shears, box & pan folders, rollers, notchers and  much more. There are very few vendors that can provide the range of equipment we have.’’

‘’Added to our massive range of equipment is the proven quality and longevity of a brand that is well recognised among industry and also the education sector. However, one of the most important factors in dealing with the sector is understanding the needs of the customer. Whilst universities are project driven, colleges are curriculum led and in both instances, the relevance to 'bridging the gap' with industry is all important. From this perspective, Ajax is one of the few vendors that will fit a choice of Fanuc, Heidenhain, Siemens or Fagor control units to its machines in the UK, to meet the needs of the customer. As many establishments work closely with industrial OEMs to train apprentices, our ability to match CNC controls with all types of machine tool is a major deciding factor in machine acquisition.’’

Not only does Ajax provide a choice of control unit, it also project manages the installation. To this end, the Hampshire machine tool specialist will often install seats of Fanuc, Heidenhain, Siemens or Fagor control software onto off-line classroom based PC's to enable 'in-class' tutoring. This enables the college to move away from the days of a class of apprentices crowding around a single machine. However, its not just the installation and supporting peripherals that Ajax provides. As Mr Fenton concludes: ‘’Whilst the academics make the choices in what they require, they often lean on our industry expertise to project manage anything from a single machine installation to a complete workshop reconfiguration or layout. By working hand-in-hand with the academics & technicians, we deliver solutions that will take students from the use of intuitive manual machines through to more complicated CNC machine tool packages. In every instance, we deliver a solution that prepares the youth of today for an exciting career in manufacturing.’’
