Return of an icon – Bridgeport Turret Mill back at MACH!

Added to MTDCNC by Engineering Technology Group on 13 March 2014

A major feature on the ShopHardinge stand 4301 in Hall 4 is the return to the UK of the iconic Bridgeport Turret Mill – the original milling, drilling and boring machine that has sold over 370,000 units in its 70 year history.

Unavailable for a few years in the UK, the Turret Mill was seen as an iconic addition to the extensive ShopHardinge portfolio when the on-line tooling, workholding and factory accessories business was bought into The Engineering Technologies Group portfolio.

'It was always an ambition to start selling the Turret Mill as there is clearly a demand for this highly versatile machine,' explains Rob Beckett, Workholding and Spares Manager.

'Many of them sit comfortably in the corner of the workshop or toolroom readily on hand to undertake a task that might involve quite a long set up on other machines.

'They are also great in apprentice training areas, schools and colleges where basic skills can be taught,' he adds.

Not that the Turret Mill is to be underestimated.

Inherently precise, it features precision ground and hand scraped channels with the heart of the machine based upon a patented 2J head containing a unique cooling system.

Keeping the machine cool and taking heat away from the machining area is achieved by a unique belt configuration which draws air past the spindle bearing during operation.  No external cooling fans means no vibration or distortion and inaccuracy due to heat is at a minimum.

From the outset great care was taken to ensure the Turret Mill had adequate lubrication reducing maintenance and wear.  A manually operated lever and valve arrangement ensures the operator can determine the precise levels of lubrication which are then maintained.

'We are sure the Turret Mill will prove to be a popular re-introduction and already – even with very preliminary awareness - we have achieved sales,' concludes Rob Beckett.

Since its UK launch 4 years ago ShopHardinge has significantly expanded its portfolio of product availability while remaining true to its core Hardinge and Bridgeport products.

Today the range embraces leading brands such as Renishaw, Hainbuch, Nikken, Schunk and Bott to name a few.
