XYZ XL 780 heavy-duty lathe is the latest addition to the XL range

Added to MTDCNC by XYZ Machine Tools on 11 November 2014

The new XYZ XL 780 heavy-duty lathe is the latest addition to the XL range of medium to large capacity lathes available from XYZ Machine Tools, and is proving to be somewhat of a hit for those customers looking for larger capacity turning without breaking the bank.

With its 780 mm swing and 3000 mm between centres, the XYZ XL 780 is the smallest machine in the XL range, but perfectly complements the larger models, which range up to the XYZ oil country lathes with their 1100 mm swing and up to 10 metre bed lengths. As with all of the machines in the XL range the XYZ XL 780 features a massive, one-piece, 500 mm wide cast bed, and a headstock that provides a heavy-duty and stable machining platform for long and large diameter components, maximising the capability of the 1300revs/min 40 hp spindle, with its 160 mm spindle bore. The rest of the machine is to a similar high specification with induction hardened gears, precision roller bearings, and high pressure lubrication; a combination that ensures smooth and efficient operation.

Control is provided by the popular Siemens 828D Shopturn control featuring conversational programming software, which means that users can be in production quickly and easily even with limited programming experience. Typical of this is the Contour Hand Wheel feature that allows the operator to run through the program manually, prior to going into full CNC mode. Other standard equipment on the XYZ XL 780 include a three-jaw 500mm diameter steel chuck, a 4way automatic toolpost, air assist ‘floating’ tailstock, and an electromagnetic spindle brake. All for a standard price of £77,000 + VAT.

'The XL 780 and the other machines in the XL range provide large capacity turning capacity at a reasonable price. Every order we have taken for machines in this range has been subject to short lead times, with delivery being critical, particularly those from companies operating in the oil and gas, and nuclear sectors. To accommodate these customers and any potential future orders, we now stock every model in the XL range at our Burlescombe factory, ready for immediate delivery,' says Nigel Atherton, Managing Director, XYZ Machine Tools.
