Surfcam Helps Machine Company Meet Order By Slashing Cycle Time

A Turkish company manufacturing shopfloor machines and production lines turned to Surfcam to help them meet an important order from an American corporation.

Kaygan Machine Industry were struggling with their previous CAM system, saying it was impossible to carry out the necessary machining because of high cycle time, meaning their production was too slow.

So they approached Vero’s reseller in Turkey, Erdal Firat Engineering High Technology, who introduced them to Surfcam software, with its unparalleled ease of use and sophisticated toolpath generation. This reduced the manufacturing cycle time by 40 per cent, enabling them to deliver the order on time.

Operating from Izmir in Turkey, Erdal Firat founded Erdal Firat Manufacturing High Technology and is still the current owner and general manager of the company. Erdal Firat Engineering plays an important role in the country’s design, manufacture and engineering industry supporting higher education institutes, universities – including Yildiz Technical University and Akdeniz University – and major foundations in Turkey such as Istanbul Silah and CMS JANT.

Erdal Firat have been supplying Vero software products for over 12 years, and remain the country’s only authorised distributor of Surfcam since 2014.

Erdal Firat says “As a dedicated Vero reseller, all of our products are from Vero.  They’re popular amongst our clients because of the reachability, accessibility, fast and practical use, smooth CAD data integration, the possibility to work independently and with a wide range of post processor support from a dynamic distributor with excellent after-sales support.”

Erdal Firat Engineering have been working closely with Kaygan Machinery since introducing Surfcam to them for the contract with CN-Wire Corporation. Operating from 1,100 square metre premises in Izmir, with 20 employees, Kaygan Machinery use SolidWorks CAD, Surfcam Traditional software with Surfcam’s TrueMill module for high speed machining on 2-axis and 3-axis milling and turning machines, to produce slitting lines, cut-to-length lines, press feeding lines, roll-forming machines, wire winding machines and custom designed machines.

Before using Surfcam they struggled with their current CAM, which was holding them back from successfully delivering CN-Wire Corporation’s large order.

Batuhan Kaygan, Founder and General Manager, says: “With our old CAM program it was impossible to meet the tight schedules, cycle times generated were very high, therefore production times were long.”

Erdal Firat Engineering arranged demonstrations to show Kaygan Machinery the difference Surfcam could make to cycle time calculations. Batuhan Kaygan describes the results as “outstanding”.

He says: “Surfcam optimised our cycle times by more than 40 per cent. The next thing was the practicality of the program, because our CAD/CAM team were using another program, we thought that it would be difficult to switch to another system.

“But the Erdal Firat team trained our employees on Surfcam and offered their unconditional support. We were astonished with the results, because our CAD/CAM facility very quickly adopted Surfcam. In just one week we became experts, and were using Surfcam perfectly. Thanks to Vero Software and Erdal Firat we delivered our order on time.”

Kaygan Machinery continue to produce their product range and often deal with thousands of parts in a single project, by using Surfcam. Due to the volume of parts they require, their CAM program needs to be fast, easy to use, flexible and compatible with third party CAD programs. “Surfcam meets all these expectations and achieves great results with a quick turnaround which wasn’t possible with their previous system.”

In conclusion, Batuhan Kaygan says: “Surfcam’s precision, wide range of features, harmony when working with other CAD programs, speed and flexibility, puts us ahead of our competitors. So, it’s important to have a system like Surfcam controlling our production and perfecting our products. In my opinion Surfcam is the best choice for any production company as it’s met all our expectations.”
