5-Axis Machining Of Composite Aircraft Components

Large composite components for the Airbus A350 family of wide-body jetliners are being machined in a pair of German-built Zimmermann FZ33 portal machining centres at a specialist subcontractor in England. Supplied by sole sales and service agent, Geo Kingsbury, each machine has a working envelope of 16 m x 3 m x 1.5 m and an installed weight of 168 tonnes.

A second automated production cell has been installed at the Tamworth factory of Alcon Components to cope with worldwide demand for its monobloc brake calipers. They are machined from aluminium or lithium billet for motorsport race cars and high-performance road cars, as well as from cast iron for military vehicles.

Family-owned subcontract machining and assembly specialist, GW Martin, has invested over £1 million in new machine tools since 2012, including three Index CNC lathes from Geo Kingsbury, installed in April this year. It is part of an ongoing upgrading of the company’s manufacturing facility, which occupies 25,000 sq ft on a 13-acre freehold site in Eastleigh, Hampshire.
