BG Engineering plans for the future with XYZ

Investing in the future of its business in terms of skills and capacity as well as expanding organically and through acquisition is at the forefront of BG Engineering’s plans. This process has been accelerated following an investment in a strategic stake in the business by Cooper Brown Enterprises Limited in 2017. Acquisitions include the recent purchase of Sheffield-based Pentag Gears and Oilfield Equipment, which has relocated to BG Engineering’s Chesterfield facility, while organic growth will focus on diversifying from existing markets of energy, process control, rail, automotive, defence, and specifically into the aerospace sector.

Monument Tools can trace its history back to 1880 when George Collier opened a tool merchant business in Brixton, London. The business gained its current name from the location of its first manufacturing business, opened in 1908, which was in the shadow of London’s Monument to the Great Fire of London. That business produced plumbing and roofing tools, products that remain at the heart of Monument Tools portfolio some five-generations later.

Investment Casting Systems, which provides a mix of toolmaking and injection moulding services to customers has seen turnover increase by 51 per cent over the past 3 years with forecast growth of 40 per cent to year ending 2019. This growth combined with planned future expansion that will double existing floorspace has created a need for even greater manufacturing efficiency. As part of this efficiency drive, the company has purchased its first five-axis machining centre, a UMC-5X from XYZ Machine Tools.

Keeping railway heritage rolling along

Built in 1903, the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway served the communities along the winding valley that joined the mainline at Welshpool. This narrow-gauge railway allowed livestock, coal and timber to be transported easily, as well as providing a passenger service until the early 1930’s.

The workshops of the Llangollen Railway provide maintenance for its own rolling stock as well as supporting other heritage railways around the UK and building brand new steam locomotives to order. Like many such organisations it relies on donations, not only of cash and time, but also machine tools. However, when one particular project came up the decision was taken to invest in new machinery in the form of an XYZ SLX 425 ProTURN lathe.
